US Interagency Elevation Inventory

The USGS National Geospatial Program is again updating the US Interagency Elevation Inventory. If you have elevation data, they would like you to give them information so that your data is discoverable by others. Your data need not be in the public domain, and the entry will provide a link to inquire about the data, or to a download site if available. This is not a repository for data; it is a way to make data findable.

Tracking Active Wildfires

Wildfires can be sparked by a number of sources, including naturally via lightning strikes or simply by heat from the sun, but experts say most are caused by humans.

Many Earth-observing satellites can detect the heat signatures associated with wildfires. NOAA’s N-20 satellite passes over every spot on Earth at least twice a day and can detect fires with 375-meter accuracy.

Check out this wildfire app that displays hotspots and fire activity in real time in the US and Canada, and within 3 hours for the rest of the planet.

ArcGIS Enterprise 11

ArcGIS Enterprise 11.0 is here. Before you jump on the bandwagon, be aware that ArcGIS Enterprise 11.0 includes several retired and modified workflows. These architecture and application changes are likely to impact your environment when upgrading from an earlier version of the software. For example, the removal of the ArcMap-based runtime will prevent you from publishing map services using ArcMap. You will also need to convert ArcMap based services to ArcGIS Pro based services. You should consider 10.9.1 until you are ready for 11.

US Census Interactive Demographic Map

The US Census Bureau has a new data tool, called My Community Explorer, that allows users to view the demographics of their individual communities. The interactive dashboard offers profiles of all US counties based on the data collected from the census survey. Beginning with a state, users can filter by demographic data including race and ethnic makeup, income and economic statistics, and industry and business profiles. Check it out!

EV Charging Stations in the US

Check out this interactive map and article about the total EV charging stations in the US. If we will be forced to buy electric vehicles soon, they better up their charging stations! While California has 13,658 charging stations, Alaska only has 40. Check it out!

As a side note, according the NACS, there are more than 145,000 fueling stations across the United States. And as you know, they can fuel multiple vehicles at one time vs. just 1 EV charging station per vehicle.

New Stuff in ArcGIS Earth

Here are some new enhancements to ArcGIS Earth:

  • The new on-screen navigation controller offers a more flexible navigation of the globe by adding zoom functionality, viewport navigation, vantage point, and orientation control into a sleek and user-friendly on-screen component. It’s also great for navigating on laptops without a mouse!
  • Vector tile layers have been a highly requested and long-awaited addition to ArcGIS Earth—now you can add vector tile layers to the My Data or Startup layer folders or set them as the basemap, depending on the data and what suits your workflow.
  • With the new 3D labeling capability in ArcGIS Earth, you can customize the style and visualization of 3D labels on the fly and set the label position and style in a 3D global view.
