Into a little history in LA County? I found this interesting map showing historic sites, old highways, battle fields, indian villages, gold mines, camps, towns, and other historical places of interest in old Los Angeles County. The map was created by George W. Kirkman and titled “The Kirkman-Harriman Pictorial and Historical Map of Los Angeles County 1860-1937”. Check it out on the LA Public Library website!

Very nice map. I love this type of local history.
Very cool!

I am lucky enough to have an original copy in my home. Mr. Harriman was member of our extended family. Mr. Harriman was also a founder of the Rancho Los Amigos Hospital.
Do you know if this map is in the public domain?
You can find a JPG copy here: https://scvhistory.com/scvhistory/la3701.htm
That being said, it doesn’t prove the copyright doesn’t exist. Regardless of who allows you to download for research purposes, as many library’s do, permission from the copyright holder is still required to post on a website or to use in printed media. It is the responsibility of the person using the media, in this case the map, to have researched copyright owners. Thus the reason I ask SCV if they know if a copyright exists?
You would have to ask SCV since it is on their site. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_domain_in_the_United_States for more info on copyrights and when things fall in public domain.
I did ask them. They don’t own the copyright, they don’t know who does. Fair use allows organizations, research libraries to offer the map for those purposes only, in the event it isn’t in the public domain. If you are friends with Harriman, can you ask him why his name appears on the map and if the map is in the public domain?
Mr. Morey,
I’ve been fascinated by the Kirkman-Harriman map for years, but just stumbled upon this post. I’m an archaeologist, and I regularly use the Kirkman-Harriman map in cultural resources assessments to help agencies comply with the California Environmental Quality Act.
Can you tell me anything about where Mr. Harriman and Mr. Kirkman got the information to make the map? It’s very accurate, but I don’t know where they got the data.
Thank you for any information you can share with me!
Marc
Marc,
Nice to receive your reply.
I’ll work up a reply to your request.
I have a fair amount of background information to share.
I just got back home from a trip, so little tired to get a detailed follow up.
Kind regards, Greg
Marc, Sorry for slow reply. I only know background on Mr. Harriman. Mr. Harriman was second wife of my mother’s cousin mother Mrs. Gertrude Geddes Logan Harriman. Gertrude Geddes Harriman was on the California State Parks Board under former Governor Edmond P. Brown in the 1960’s. I did inherit several items of interest besides the Kirkman-Harriman Map. I have attached photos of a pamphlet you might find interesting. Thanks for your communication. Kind regards, Greg
